Calories in Banana: Protein, Carbs and Fat per 100 g and per Serving

Quick answer: A medium banana (7 to 7⅞ inches, 118 g peeled) has about 105 kcal: 27 g of carbohydrate, of which 14 g is sugar and 3.1 g is fiber, plus 1.3 g of protein and 0.4 g of fat. Per 100 g a raw banana is 89 kcal. Almost all of the energy is carbohydrate, so the size of the banana is the only thing that moves the number — a small one is about 90 kcal, an extra large one about 135.

Calories by size

Weights are for the peeled fruit, using the USDA size bands by length.

Fat stays under 1 g for every size in the table. If you weigh food, the per-100 g line below is the more accurate way to log: banana length is a rough guide, and the same length can be thicker or thinner.

Per 100 g nutrition

Raw banana, peeled, per 100 g:

NutrientAmount
Calories89 kcal
Protein1.1 g
Fat0.3 g
Saturated fat0.1 g
Carbohydrate23 g
Sugars12 g
Fiber2.6 g
Water75 g
Potassium358 mg
Magnesium27 mg
Vitamin C8.7 mg
Vitamin B60.37 mg

About three quarters of a banana's weight is water, which is why it is low in calories per gram compared with dried fruit. Potassium is the nutrient bananas are known for: a medium banana gives about 420 mg.

Forms and variants

Drying removes the water and concentrates everything else; frying adds fat. Per 100 g:

FormCaloriesProteinFatCarbsSugarFiberFDC ID
Raw banana89 kcal1.1 g0.3 g23 g12 g2.6 g173944
Dehydrated banana or banana powder345 kcal3.9 g1.8 g88 g47 g9.9 g173945
Banana chips (snack)520 kcal2.3 g34 g58 g35 g7.7 g168849

Banana chips are the one to watch. A 1 oz (28 g) handful is about 145 kcal and 9.5 g of fat, most of it saturated (29 g of the 34 g per 100 g) — more energy than a medium banana in a portion that takes a minute to eat. Packaged chips vary by brand, so for a specific bag use the label.

Banana and a calorie deficit

A banana fits a deficit the same way any food does: by its calories against your daily target. At about 105 kcal for a medium one, with 3.1 g of fiber and almost no fat, it is an easy snack to count accurately — the only variable is size. Two medium bananas a day add about 210 kcal; whether that fits depends on the rest of the day, not on the banana.

Where bananas add up quietly is in mixed foods: a smoothie with two bananas, a banana with nut butter, banana bread. Log the banana as its own line and the extras separately. For setting the daily target itself, see how to set a calorie deficit for weight loss.

How to log it

Voice is the quickest: "one medium banana" or "a large banana". Size is the one fact the app needs, so say it.

Photo recognises a banana easily, but size is harder to judge from a picture. A banana next to a mug or a hand gives the app scale; otherwise add "small" or "large" as a note. For bananas in a smoothie or a bowl, say how many went in.

Barcode is for packaged products — dried banana, banana chips, banana bread — where the brand's label is the right source. A loose banana has no barcode.
