New Year's Eve Party Food and Drinks: Calorie Guide

Quick answer: New Year's Eve isn't one plate. It's five hours of small handfuls. A typical evening at the snack table (chips and queso, cheese and crackers, salami, shrimp cocktail, little smokies, meatballs, deviled eggs, a few veggie sticks and some chocolate) adds up to about 1,310 kcal. Three flutes of sparkling wine add about 290 more. New Year's Eve 2026 is Thursday, December 31.

A typical evening at the snack table

Nobody eats this in one sitting. It's what one guest picks up over an evening, one pass at a time. Every row is a USDA record and a portion you can picture: an ounce of chips is a small handful, three meatballs are one toothpick pass.

SnackPortionkcalProtein
Tortilla chips1 oz (28 g), a small handful1352.0 g
Salsa con queso dip2 tbsp (30 g)430.9 g
Cheddar1 oz (28 g)1156.5 g
Brie1 oz (28 g)955.9 g
Snack crackers, round5 crackers (16 g)821.1 g
Hard salami3 slices (29 g)1106.2 g
Shrimp, cooked3 oz (85 g)10019 g
Chili sauce for the shrimp2 tbsp (34 g)310.9 g
Little smoked sausages, cheese-filled4 links (36 g)1154.9 g
Meatballs, Italian style3 meatballs (56 g)1608.1 g
Deviled eggs2 halves (1 large egg + 2 tsp mayo)1406.4 g
Carrot and celery sticks50 g each290.8 g
Dark chocolate1 oz (28 g)1551.4 g
Total, snacks1,31064 g

That's about two-thirds of a 2,000-kcal day, and it doesn't feel like it, because no single bite is big. The heaviest rows are the meatballs, the chocolate, the chips and the processed meats. Each one is a small handful at 110–160 kcal.

The table also carries about 3,500 mg of sodium. About 60 % of it comes from four rows: the shrimp, the salami, the chili sauce and the sausages. That's well above the WHO limit of 2 g of sodium for a whole day. A higher number on the scale on January 1 is mostly water from that salt. How much salt per day →

Drinks and the midnight toast

Drinks get a few lines here; the full list of beers, wines, spirits and cocktails is in calories in alcohol.

DrinkPortionkcal
Sparkling wine, dry (white wine record)1 flute, 4 fl oz (118 g)95
White wine1 glass, 5 fl oz (147 g)120
Hard cider12 fl oz (355 g)200
Sparkling apple cider, non-alcoholic (apple juice record)4 fl oz (124 g)57
Cranberry juice cocktail1 cup, 8 fl oz (253 g)135

USDA has no separate record for champagne or prosecco. We used the white table wine record, which gives about 95 kcal per 4 fl oz flute. That matches the 85–95 kcal per 125 ml we list for brut sparkling wine in the alcohol guide. Sweeter styles (labelled "extra dry", "dry" or "demi-sec") have more sugar and more calories.

A cup of cranberry juice cocktail, often poured as the non-alcoholic option or as a mixer, has more calories than a flute of bubbly. Four ounces of sparkling apple cider for the toast is about 57.

What to pick

The numbers point to a few swaps that save real calories, and a few that barely matter.

  • Shrimp cocktail is the best deal on the table. 3 oz of shrimp with sauce is about 130 kcal and 20 g of protein. Three meatballs are 160 kcal with 8 g of protein.
  • Salsa over queso saves about 33 kcal per 2 tbsp: plain salsa is about 10 kcal, salsa con queso 43. Not huge, but it adds up over an evening of dipping.
  • Veggie sticks instead of the chips save about 105 kcal. 100 g of carrot and celery is 29 kcal; an ounce of chips is 135.
  • Skip the processed meats and save about 225 kcal. Salami and little sausages together are 225 kcal and a large share of the sodium.
  • Cheddar or brie barely matters. Brie is about 20 kcal lower per ounce. Pick by taste and watch how many ounces you eat.
  • Count the chocolate. An ounce of dark chocolate is 155 kcal, about the same as the meatballs.
  • For the toast, one flute is about 95 kcal. Three over the evening are about 290, more than the chips and queso together.

One party won't undo a month of steady eating. Even with drinks, the evening is about 1,600 kcal above whatever else you ate that day. It's one high day, and January 1 is a normal day again. Calorie deficit for weight loss →

How to log a party

A party is harder to log than a dinner: there's no plate, the food comes in handfuls for hours, and you're talking the whole time.

  • Take a short video of what you picked up. In CalMePlease a video can hold several snacks, and the AI logs each one as a separate entry. Do it once per trip to the table, not once per bite.
  • Say it in a few seconds. A voice note like "handful of tortilla chips, two tablespoons of queso, three meatballs" is faster than typing at a party. Voice food logging →
  • Scan the packaged stuff. Chips, crackers and chocolate from the store have a barcode; scanning it gives you the label numbers.
  • Log drinks as you pour them. They're spread over hours and they're the easiest thing to forget by midnight.
  • Forgot? Add the evening to December 31 from the calendar the next day. A rough log beats a blank day.

FAQ

How many calories are in New Year's Eve party food? About 1,310 kcal for a typical evening of snacks: a handful of tortilla chips with queso, an ounce each of cheddar and brie with crackers, salami, shrimp cocktail, little smoked sausages, meatballs, deviled eggs, veggie sticks and an ounce of dark chocolate. Three flutes of sparkling wine bring it to about 1,600.

How many calories are in a glass of champagne? About 95 kcal in a 4 fl oz (118 ml) flute of dry sparkling wine, based on the USDA record for white table wine. Sweeter styles have more. A 5 fl oz glass of white wine is about 120.

How many calories are in shrimp cocktail? About 130 kcal for 3 oz (85 g) of cooked shrimp with 2 tbsp of chili-based cocktail sauce: 100 from the shrimp and 31 from the sauce. It has about 20 g of protein, more than any other snack on the table.

How many calories are in a deviled egg? About 70 kcal per half, made with one large egg and 2 teaspoons of regular mayonnaise for two halves. Each extra teaspoon of mayo in the filling adds about 31 kcal.

What are the lowest-calorie New Year's Eve snacks? Veggie sticks (about 15 kcal per 50 g of mixed carrot and celery), salsa (about 10 kcal per 2 tbsp) and shrimp cocktail (about 130 kcal with the most protein). The highest are meatballs, chocolate, chips and processed meats.

Will one New Year's Eve party make me gain weight? Not much fat. 1,300–1,600 kcal of snacks and drinks is one high day. A jump on the scale on January 1 is mostly water from the salt and usually fades within a few days of normal eating.
